What’s New in Texas for Pool Pumps?
Federal regulations now require residential pool pumps over 1.15 Total Horsepower (THP) to be variable speed motors, effective as of July 19, 2021. Additionally, new rules are rolling out through 2025 and 2027:
Motors ≥ 1.15 THP must be variable-speed by Sept 29, 2025.
Motors 0.5 – 1.15 THP by Sept 28, 2027.
Motors below 0.5 THP must achieve at least 69% efficiency by Sept 29, 2025.

Variable-speed pumps offer energy savings of 40–80%, quieter operation, and longer lifespans.
Texas law requires all electrical installations related to pool equipment to be done by licensed electricians or qualified technicians.
Regular compliance checks for safety features (such as drain covers) are mandated under Texas administrative code.
