Do You Know What Filter You Have in Your Swimming Pool?

💧 Here’s how to tell just by looking at it!

Your pool filter is one of the most important components for keeping your water clean and safe, but many homeowners don’t know which type they have. Knowing makes a big difference when it comes to maintenance and water quality.

Here’s a quick guide to identify your filter just by its shape and valves:

🔹 DE Filter (Diatomaceous Earth)

Common in residential pools for its high filtration efficiency

✅ Tall, vertical tank often looks like a large capsule

✅ May have a multiport valve or a bump handle on top

✅ Requires adding DE powder after cleaning or backwashing

📌 If your filter needs powder after cleaning, it’s a DE filter. They’re great for capturing fine particles but need regular attention.

🔹 Cartridge Filter

Also very common in residential pools low maintenance and energy-efficient

✅ Tall, slim, vertical cylinder

✅ No multiport valve just a drain plug and pressure gauge

✅ Opens with a clamp band around the middle

📌 If there’s no backwash valve, and you rinse it with a hose, it’s a cartridge filter.

🔹 Sand Filter

Most often found in commercial pools, but some older home pools use them too

✅ Large round tank—like a barrel

✅ Has a multiport valve on top or side with settings like “Filter,” “Backwash,” “Rinse”

✅ Includes a sight glass and pressure gauge

📌 If you have a valve with multiple settings and a wide body tank, it’s likely a sand filter.
