Water loss in a pool is often expected to be greater than evaporation alone, but how can you tell the difference before it becomes a major problem?
Why Do Pools Lose Water Naturally?
Evaporation occurs when water turns into vapor and leaves the pool. How quickly this happens depends on several environmental factors:
- Water temperature and sun exposure
- Humidity and wind levels
- Whether your pool is heated
- Use of fountains, waterfalls, and other water features
Even cooler weather doesn’t stop evaporation especially when warm pool water meets dry, moving air. This is why comparing your pool to your neighborโs or relying on a general rule of thumb isn’t enough.
โ ๏ธ Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Pay close attention if:
- You are adding water noticeably more often than usual under similar weather conditions.
- The water level keeps dropping when no one is swimming and no water was drained for cleaning.
- There are persistent wet spots around the equipment pad or nearby ground that rain or irrigation can’t explain.
- You notice or hear dripping from pipes, valves, or equipment.
- Your water bill increases without a clear explanation.
These signs don’t automatically confirm a pool leak, but they definitely warrant further investigation.
๐ชฃ Try the Bucket Test
A simple bucket test helps you compare natural evaporation directly against your poolโs total water loss:
- Prepare the Pool: Start with your pool at its normal operating water level. Turn off the auto fill system if you have one.
- Set Up the Bucket: Place a clean, secure bucket on a pool step. The bucket should be partially submerged, with its rim above the poolโs surface so it doesn’t tip or float.
- Fill & Mark: Add pool water inside the bucket to match the outside pool level. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
- Wait 24 Hours: Let it sit for 24 hours under normal filtration schedules. Do not let anyone swim or splash water out during the test.
- Compare the Drop: Measure how much each water level has dropped from its starting mark.
- Equal Drop: If both drops are approximately the same, evaporation likely explains the water loss.
- Pool Drops More: If the pool level drops noticeably more than the bucket, an underlying leak or unexplained issue needs professional investigation.
Safety Reminder: Keep children away from the bucket and secure pool access. Monitor the water level and stop the test if it gets too low for safe pump operation. Never let the pump run dry!
