Freezing temperatures can cause serious and expensive damage to pool equipment if the proper precautions aren’t taken. Every winter we see cracked pipes, damaged pumps, broken filters, and costly repairs that could have been avoided with a few simple steps.
Here’s what you should do before freezing weather arrives ![]()
Keep the pump running 24/7
This is the single most important action you can take. When water is moving, it is much less likely to freeze. Running the pump continuously helps protect:
Pipes and plumbing – Pumps and motors – Filters and heaters – Valves and other equipment
If there is one rule to remember during a freeze, this is it.
Avoid draining the system
In most situations, draining pumps and plumbing is not recommended. If done incorrectly, it can actually increase the risk of freeze damage. Continuous circulation is usually safer and more effective for typical Houston area freezes.
Watch exposed equipment
Pools with exposed pipes or above ground equipment are more vulnerable. Keeping water circulating is essential, and in some cases additional insulation may help but circulation is still the key defense.
Understand the limits
While running the pump is the best protection, extremely severe or long-lasting freezes can still cause damage even when precautions are taken. Acting early and setting your system properly greatly reduces the risk.
Don’t wait until it’s freezing
If you’re unsure how your system is set up, or if your equipment needs to be adjusted for cold weather, having a professional check it before the freeze arrives can save you stress and money.
Strong advice:
If freezing days are in the forecast, don’t wait. Make sure your pump is set correctly and your equipment is protected now.
