If you own a salt pool, your salt cell is the heart of your system. It turns salt into chlorine and keeps your water clean. But if it gets dirty or scaled, it can’t do its job.
So… how often should you clean it?
### The short answer:
Check your salt cell every 2 – 3 months
Clean it only if you see scale or buildup
Cleaning too often is actually bad acid wears down the cell plates and shortens its life.
### What you’re looking for
When you look inside the cell:
* White or crusty buildup = needs cleaning
* Clean metal plates = leave it alone
### What causes salt cells to get dirty?
* High calcium levels
* High pH
* Poor water balance
Bad chemistry = faster scaling = shorter cell life.
### Ideal salt range
Most salt systems work best between:
2,700 – 3,500 ppm of salt
(Always follow your system’s exact recommendation.)
Too low:
* Cell can’t make enough chlorine
Too high:
* Can damage equipment and void warranties
### Signs your salt cell needs attention
* Low chlorine even when system is on
* “Check cell” or “Low salt” warnings
* Cloudy or green water
* Cell is 4 – 6+ years old
### The real secret: water balance
Balanced water means:
* Less scale
* Fewer cleanings
* Longer salt cell life
* Less money spent on replacements
### Final tip
Don’t clean on a schedule clean by inspection.
Check it regularly, but only clean when it truly needs it.
